Rugby Crusaders 45 Luctonians 2nds 19Sat 16 Feb

Rugby Crusaders turned in an excellent performance to defeat Luctonians 2nds 45-19 at Webb Ellis Road on Saturday.

Michael Rust was the star of the show with three of the Crusaders’ seven tries, two of them set up by fellow wing Paul Davies, who enjoyed a fine game, as did all-action back-row duo Santiago Sanchez Paez and Alan Tucker, while inspirational captain Stewart Pearl once again led from the front.

Crusaders stormed into a 28-0 interval lead before Luctonians rallied to ‘win’ the second half 19-17.

Coach Richard Gee said: “It was a huge improvement on the performance against Rugby St Andrews the week before. There was great shape in what the guys were trying to do; we moved the ball well and we score some good tries. I didn’t expect such a good performance because they were all a bit quiet in the warm-up, but come game-time they just switched on and away they went.”

Crusaders are next in action on Saturday when they travel down to the Forest of Dean to play the return fixture against Cinderford United.

The first fixture between the sides was a closely-fought and entertaining encounter, which Rugby won 24-7.

And Gee knows his side will be in for another tough battle at Dockham Road this weekend.

He added: “The guys are going to really have to step things up again because Cinderford gave us a cracking game at our place. It was a full-on battle for 80 minutes.

“They are two leagues above us, so it is going to be a big, big game. But Saturday’s performance gives us something to build on.”
